WELCOME to The Highway Subcommittee on Highway Transport


The Subcommittee shall be concerned with the interrelationship between commercial vehicle operations and the highway systems of the United States. It shall evaluate the degree to which the needs of interstate commerce are met by the highway systems in their current state of improvement under existing laws, policies and practices, and make recommendations that contribute to improving the efficiency of highway systems to handle commercial vehicles with due regard to public safety and the conservation and cost of the highway plant.

Bridge Rating Practices and Policies for Overweight Vehicles: A Synthesis of Highway Practice

A commercial vehicle exceeding the legal limits on size and/or weight for a jurisdiction must have a permit to operate within the jurisdiction. During a permit review, bridge evaluation for the particular permit vehicle may be required, depending on the jurisdiction's laws, regulations, and/or practices. Different jurisdictions in the U.S. have various laws and regulations that can make the travel of the permit vehicle difficult and inefficient. The practice of bridge evaluation for permit review also varies, sometimes significantly, among the agencies issuing these permits. The synthesis report summarizes current bridge evaluation practices and permit policies for overweight vehicles in the U.S., focusing on their nonuniformity.
