Louisiana hosts record breaking attendance for AASHTO's Subcommittee on Highway Transport

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development hosted the Annual Meeting of AASHTO’s Subcommittee on Highway Transport in New Orleans on June 14-15.

The Subcommittee, chaired by Jim Lynch, Director of the Montana Department of Transportation, is responsible for issues pertaining to the interrelationship between commercial vehicle operations and the highway systems of the United States, including the degree to which the needs of interstate commerce are met by the highway systems in their current state.

Major items on the agenda included the integrating of vehicle and roadside technology, the application of Canadian commercial vehicle experience to the U.S., alternatives for federal truck size and weight increases, the transport of wind-powered turbines, and implementation of the results of the European size and weight enforcement scan.

Speakers included Tony Furst, Director of the FHWA Office of Freight Management and Operations, John Woodrooffe, University of Michigan Transportation Institute, Julie Lane, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Bill Mahorney, Federal Highway Administration, and Claire Bertel, Siemens Power Generation.

The newly-created Highway Freight Movement Task Force met for the first time and the Subcommittee approved resolutions on changing boat carrier regulations and guidance on escort vehicles for email ballot.

Members approved recommendations by Chairman Lynch to hold a meeting in Washington, DC, next February 21-22 and to extend to two-and-half days next year’s Annual Meeting in St. Louis.
