The Special Committee on Intermodal Transportation and Economic Expansion


The Committee shall study and develop recommendations on intermodal transportation issues and on the relationship between freight transportation and the economy. Of special concern will be the interconnectivity of transportation modes and systems, and interface requirements between airports, highways, ports, railroads, transit systems and waterways important for freight movement and economic expansion. It shall formulate and carry out a strategy to develop and support the case for the economic value of transportation. It shall arrange dialogues with the business community, foster an information exchange of transportation-economic information among the Member Departments, stimulate further research, review and advise on the economic impact of transportation policies and regulations, assist Member Departments in their analysis of the economic benefits and consequences of transportation programs and approaches to maximize the economic value of transportation, coordinate with other public and private associations with similar interests.

Heartland Intermodal Partnership (HIP)

The Heartland Intermodal Partnership In June 2003, MARAD led the formation of the Heartland Intermodal Partnership (HIP), a coalition of senior public and private sector professionals from across the 24-states of the nation’s heartland. Its mission is to support economic competitiveness of the region’s business, industry and labor by improving intermodal transportation.

Electronic Intermodal Supply Chain Manifest


This report presents the results of a 2.5 year freight ITS evaluation of an air cargo security and logistics system which was deployed at O’Hare and JFK international airports. In September 1999, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) jointly funded a field operational test to develop an electronic supply chain manifest system for air cargo. The primary objectives of this test were to increase the security of air cargo operations, while providing shippers and carriers with improved efficiencies in their operations.

The National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission

AASHTO Recommendations: Team 5. Multimodal Freight Systems
Tom Norton, chairman of the Special Committee on Intermodal Transportation and Economic Expansion, headed a policy team that gave recommendations regarding freight policies and programs, including highways and trucking, intermodal connectors, freight rail, and ports.
