A National Forum on Agriculture and Transportation Linkages "Assessing the Importance of Transportation to Major Industrial Sectors of the U.S. Economy"

This work was sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, United States Department of Agriculture, and the United States Department of Transportation; and was conducted in the National Cooperative Highway Research Program, which is administered by the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies.
Overview:
Participants in the National Forum on Agriculture and Transportation, organized and hosted by the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute in Fargo, North Dakota, May 17 and 18, 2002, focused on the proposition that a "competitive and complete transportation system is necessary for U.S. agriculture to maintain its competitive edge."

provides $298 billion for highways, roads and bridges and $69 billion for transit; and increases the highway minimum guarantee from 90.5 percent to 95 percent by 2009. This report presents guidance on the most effective strategies for financing improvements to cargo hub and intermodal freight facilities. These strategies focus on existing and emerging funding sources and on developing partnerships between government agencies, cargo hub improvements projects across the U.S., the research team selected 12 projects as case studies for in-depth analysis.

TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis Report 320:
Integrating Freight Facilities and Operations with Community Goals identifies practices that have been or are being used by private-sector freight companies and public transportation agencies in citing their facilities, modifying their operations, and managing their community relations. “Good neighbor initiatives” and balancing practices employed by metropolitan planning and economic development organizations, local governments, and others are also recognized. The report covers water, truck, rail, and air freight facilities and operations. Although the report does not include pipelines, several of the issues and practices discussed are relevant to pipeline facilities and operations.
