Highway Projects with Freight Benefits
Some highway projects specifically improve conditions for freight, but most often, improved freight mobility is just one part of a project’s overall benefits. The Nickel Fund projects listed below are considered to have freight benefits because they are in an area that has a high volume of truck traffic, are near a port or intermodal border, or make it easier for large or heavy trucks to maneuver more and efficiently.

Iowa
Intermodal Pilot Project
The Department currently has one funding program, the Intermodal Pilot Project Program, to provide assistance to intermodal projects. This funding came from oil overcharge funds through the Department of Energy to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and then to the Iowa Department of Transportation in the late 1980s. The fund was established with $725,000 for new intermodal transportation facilities or to improve, restore, conserve, repair, rehabilitate or expand existing intermodal transportation facilities.

INTERCITY RAIL PLAN - The Intercity Rail Passenger Plan prepared for the
Georgia Department of Transportation (GADOT) collected extensive information
on current intercity travel within the State for 1995, made forecasts
of future travel by all modes, examined the suitability of existing railroad
corridors for rail passenger service, and estimated ridership, revenues,
costs, and external benefits of intercity rail passenger service in a
number of possible corridors. From these corridors, a first-priority network
of lines was recommended, as well as a second-priority network. The priority
lines are are discussed in more detail at the end of the summary.
