![]() Chair -- Astrid C. Glynn, New York CorridorsChicago Region Environmental And Transportation Efficiency Project (CREATE)The National Council for Public-Private Partnerships PROJECT SUMMARY Chicago is America's transportation hub, and freight railroads play a crucial role in this vital network. The Chicago rail infrastructure covers approximately 16,000 acres - more than twice the area of Chicago O'Hare International Airport - carrying 500 freight and 700 commuter trains each day. Chicago is the world's third busiest intermodal hub, surpassed only by Hong Kong and Singapore. With the nation's freight volume expected to nearly double in the next 20 years - and with one third of America's goods and products moving to, from or through Chicago - the area's rail network is crucial to the local, regional and national economy. Just as rivers and railroads carved East-West corridors in our nation's early years, today, concrete and asphalt corridors are needed to connect and expand the economies of the United States, Mexico, Canada, and our local economies that trade on a global scale. The Ports-to-Plains Trade Corridor is a planned four-lane divided highway that will facilitate the efficient transportation of goods and people from Mexico through west Texas, the Panhandle and on to Denver, Colorado. The purpose of this project is to develop a long-range strategic plan to manage and improve transportation in the I-5 corridor stretching from I-84 in downtown Portland to I-205 north of Vancouver.
